La Berma del Camino

For Flute and Marimba

Commissioned by Phoebe Robertson and Cory Fica, Arkansas Tech University

La Berma del Camino (The Shoulder of the Road) Duration: 7 minutes Approximately

This piece is a tribute to the innocent animals whose lives end quietly on the side of the road — beings that

wander, play, and leap freely through the fields before encountering the fragility of human paths. The music is

inspired by their joyful and unguarded movements — the lightness of their steps, the curiosity of their eyes,

and the natural rhythm of their world. But it also reflects the stillness that follows tragedy, that mysterious

moment when life and motion are interrupted.

La Berma del Camino moves through three emotional landscapes:

1. 2. 3. Saltando por el Campo (Jumping Through The Field) — a celebration of life and innocence, full of

motion and wonder.

Cerca a la Berma (Near the Side of the Road) — where joy becomes tension, as fragility and danger

enter the scene.

Danzando en el Más Allá (Dancing in the Afterlife) — a vision of freedom regained, where the

animals continue their playful dance, and leap beyond this world.

This piece is dedicated to the memory of my family dog, Toby, and a personal encounter with a deer on the

road. It serves as a reminder of the delicate coexistence between human and animal life.
